Cancer is one of the health conditions that many people fear, but understanding what cancer actually is can help people recognize risk factors, take prevention seriously and seek medical attention when something unusual happens.
Cancer is not one single disease. It is a broad group of diseases that can develop in almost any part of the body.
According to the World Health Organization, cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow beyond their normal boundaries and can invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. This spread is called metastasis.
How does cancer begin?
The human body is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, cells grow, divide and eventually die in a controlled way.
Cancer can develop when changes occur in the genetic material that controls how cells behave.
Instead of following the normal process, abnormal cells may continue multiplying when they should stop.
Over time, these abnormal cells can form a mass called a tumour.
Not every tumour is cancerous.

What does "spreading" mean?

Metastatic cancer can be more difficult to treat, which is one reason why early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are so important.
What causes cancer?

Can cancer be cured?

Treatment depends on the type and stage of cancer and may include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone treatment, targeted therapies or immunotherapy.
There is no single cancer treatment that works for every cancer.
The important lesson
Cancer should not automatically be viewed as a death sentence.
The earlier an appropriate diagnosis is made and treatment begins, the better the opportunity for effective management for many cancers.

What is a cancer risk factor?
A risk factor is something that can increase the likelihood of developing a disease.

Some can be changed.
Others cannot.
1. Tobacco use
Tobacco is one of the most important preventable causes of cancer.

What cannot you control?

Don't let risk become fear
